Race Report from SUP Team Rider Brandon Rahe
February 19th & 20th 2011
First beautiful day of the Spring season in Florida…perfect for SUP racing!
To kick things off:
YOLO Winter Race Series #3
I competed in the Stock Board Division (because I started this series before I owned a race board!) This series is a points series, and I was leading on points going into this race. I hurt my shoulder really bad by over-extending while leading at the very first buoy turn…so I limped through the race in survival mode…and finished in 2nd place!
After a full day and night of icing the shoulder…I was mentally preparing for IF I should race on Sunday.
Precision Paddleboards was putting on the West Coast Championships in Clearwater FL, and a few fast sponsored racers were going to be there. I arrived early to warm up and test out my shoulder…which seemed to be feeling alright to attempt the race. I was on my 12’6” race board for this 5 miler…and I led the race all the way to a FIRST PLACE finish.
At both races, I met some new fantastic friends in the SUP community, and shared laughs and stories with some old ones. What a great way to spread the love of SUPing!
Thanks to all my fellow athletes and competitors out there…and thanks so much to my sponsor STARBOARD!!!
